About this tool

This test runs in three stages: first ten paced round trips to measure latency and jitter, then several rounds of downloading random (and therefore incompressible) data to measure download throughput, then the same number of rounds uploading data to measure upload throughput. Each round is automatically sized based on the previous one, so the test takes a comparable amount of time — around 15-20 seconds in total — whether your connection is slow or very fast. All data is generated on the fly and never stored.

Measures speed to Cloudflare's network

Like most browser-based speed tests, this measures your connection to the nearest Cloudflare edge location, not to an arbitrary point on the internet. See the FAQ below for what that means in practice.

Frequently asked questions

Does this measure my full internet speed?
It measures the speed between your browser and Cloudflare's network — specifically, the edge location nearest you. For most people, most of the time, this is a very close approximation of their overall internet speed, since Cloudflare operates in hundreds of cities worldwide. It will differ from a test against a specific distant server, or from your ISP's own speed test to their own infrastructure.
Why do the results vary between runs?
Network conditions change constantly — other devices on your network, WiFi interference, your ISP's current load, and routing changes all affect the result. Run the test a few times at different points to get a representative picture.
Why is this tool JavaScript-only?
Measuring bandwidth requires timing real data transfers in your browser as they happen — there is no way to do this with a server-rendered page alone. This is one of the few tools on this site that genuinely cannot work without JavaScript.
